Isn't a moisturiser...... Just a moisturiser?
Well actually, no. The main 3 moisturising and hydrating categories are Humectants, Emollients and Occlusives. This also involves hair care too!
Humectants attract and draw moisture into the outermost skin layers, or hair shaft, by binding with water molecules from the air and deeper layers of the skin, acting like water magnets. Examples of Humectants are Hyaluronic acid, Glycerin, Aloe Vera, Panthenol, Urea.
Emollients help soften and repair the skin surface, or hair shaft, by delivering lipids to replace lost natural skin lipids and smooth out rough skin texture. Examples of these include Cocoa butter, Shea butter, Fatty acids (eg coconut oil) and Plant oils (eg Olive oil).
Occlusives help to seal in moisture and protect against external factors by creating a barrier on the skin surface and hair shaft. Examples of these are Fatty acids (eg Coconut oil), Waxes/Wax esters (eg Candelilla wax and Jojoba oil) and Silicones (eg Dimethicone).
Actives: A broad term for additional ingredients added to skin or hair care products to change the skin or hair in a beneficial way. Examples are Retinol, Vitamin C, Hyaluronic acid, AHA natural fruit extract, Phytokeratin etc
Extracts/CO2 Extracts: These are natural essences extracted from plants for their therapeutic properties. They are extracted using Carbon Dioxide, the purest and gentlest way to extract the plant essence, creating a concentrated and potent form , used in skin and haircare products, examples are Sea Buckthorn, Comfrey, Rosemary, Aloe Vera, Horsetail etc.
